Boy genius Tony Stark invents something that he says will impress his dad. He offers Rhodey to come show him, but he says that some of us have to go to school. At Stark Tower, Tony sees his father and tells him that his laser system on the Earth Movers is finished testing and is moving out in the field today. Tony asks for him to see his new invention. Obadiah Stane bursts in the office and asks why Howard rejected his proposal to weaponize the Earth Movers. Howard replies that turning an invention to make peoples lives better into a weapon is not going to happen, and that it's his company. Obadiah leaves in such a mood. Howard will see Tony's new invention after one quick stop.

They're heading to the archeological site where Stark International is excavating ancient Chinese ruins to uncover information on the Makluan Rings, which Howard has been researching for some time now. They see Tony's new Earth Movers at work. Howard is giving up his own Makluan ring for a day to do a comparative analysis of it and the new artifacts they have found today.

On the flight home, Obadiah Stane is still insisting his approval about weaponizing the Earth Movers, which Howard refuses one last time. Then, something unknown happened to both of them and their plane blew up.

Some time later, We find Tony awake in a bed with his artificial heart implant on him. Mrs. Rhodes comes in and says that breakfast is ready, James is downstairs and the two of them can head over to Stark International to see Obadiah, then to school at the Tomorrow Academy.

Tony and Rhodey are blocked by a security guard. He confirms their appointment and says that only Tony, not Rhodey, can go see Stane. Rhodey asks Tony if he's up for this. Tony says he's okay because it's still his dad's company. Tony is escorted by the guard to Stane's office. Obadiah assures Stark that the company is in good hands until he's legally ready to take over. Tony insisted to be more involved. Stane says that this is what his father would've wanted, to have a normal life and going to school. Tony wanted all of his research and his father's notes, but Obadiah stated that verything he and his father worked on is company property. Obadiah says he's glad we had this talk and tries to shake Tony's hand. Tony discovers that he's wearing his father's Makluan ring.

Back outside, Rhodey asked how it went. Tony angrily threw his backpack on the floor and kicked it onto the street. Tony and Rhodey go to school at the Tomorrow Academy. Tony questions why his father wanted him to go to school, but when he looks at a pretty girl passing by, he decides to give it a try. Tony shows off his high intelligence by solving a complex equation in a second, questioning if  his physics book is outdated, even demonstrating a how a previous invention of his to a teacher.

During Stark's free period, he looks at Stark Tower and has a flashback about the plane crash. Here, Tony was badly injured and the armor's glove he was wearing kept his heart beating for a few minutes. Tony crawled to his armor, put it on, activated it, and began treatment of his heart and chest, then he engaged the autopilot to take him to Rhodey's place, then he passed out.

Pepper Potts informed him that the FBI is investigating Obadiah Stane after Howard Stark's death. Tony goes to the lab he's been working on with Rhodey and uses the armor for the first time so he can spy on Stane. Stark hacks into the company's files and discovers that Obadiah had weaponized the Earth Movers.

He detects a runaway train heading for the building's power grid which could destroy the hundreds of people in the building. First, Tony tries changing the tracks, but Rhodey tells him that the track he just switched the train to isn't finished yet. Stark tries to push the train, which drains his artificial heart. Tony separates the cars and lifts the main car to a safe place, therefore saving hundreds of lives. The incident is all over the news, there calling Tony, "Iron Man". Tony decides to adopt this new name to save Stark International from itself.

Somewhere, a man is reporting that the runaway train plan has failed and they did not retrieve the Makluan ring. An armored man states that it will be his last failure in his life, and that nothing will stand between the Mandarin and his destiny. He is showing that he has a Makluan ring as well.
